ACADEMIC STAFF

The Da Vinci Faculty consists of academic staff who possess a combination of the required academic, lecturing and research acumen coupled with relevant industry experience. Our Academic staff co-create realities with students to encourage the growth of agile, aligned and engaged leaders through self-reflection, self-discovery and the exploration of new knowledge.

QUALIFICATIONS / ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Prof. Anderson holds a Philosophiae Doctor (UFS), Masters of Arts in Psychology (UFS), Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Philosophy (UFS), Bachelor of Arts in Theology (UFS), National Diploma in Theology (UFS) and is a Registered Psychologist.

WORK BACKGROUND

Prof. Anderson has worked in various teaching and management positions at the University of the Free State, between 1991 and 2000. He joined First National Bank (FNB), where he was involved in staff development since 2001, and eventually served as the Chief Learning Officer of FNB from 2003 to 2005. He then became the first Chief Executive Officer/Vice President of The Da Vinci Institute – now, its current Executive Chairperson.

Adrienne holds a Master of Science in Technology and Innovation (The Da Vinci Institute), Bachelor of Arts (Wits) with majors in English III, Hebrew II, Sociology and Social Anthropology, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (IMM).

WORK BACKGROUND

Adrienne held various posts in the Tourism Industry including managing travel agencies and running a specialised Group Tour Department. She worked for Alitalia in the Sales Department and for Sun International as a coordinator for the Superstars who entertained at Sun City.

She worked in the Industrial Real Estate sector as an Industrial broker focussing on the letting and selling of Industrial buildings. She has run a training consultancy for the past 10 years that has facilitated many interventions predominantly in the then FET sector for the National Department of Education and various FET Colleges.

QUALIFICATIONS / ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Dr Vulumuzi holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Management of Technology and Innovation(The Da Vinci Institute), Master of Business Administration (Princeton University) and Bachelor of Business Administration (Princeton University).

Dr Vulumuzi is the Executive Chairman/Chief Executive for UI Brands.

WORK BACKGROUND

Jan has been an Associate with the Da Vinci Insitute in Johannesburg since March 2009. During this time he was responsible for the design, development and implementation of a certificate qualification in the Management of Technology and Innovation, applied to supervisory leadership development. Though this programme was originally designed for the gold mining industry in Africa, it was later also customised to the development needs of team leaders in the telecommunications industry.

In 2016 he became Head of Faculties Business Leadership and Management of People at The Institute. These appointments include supporting the design office in the curriculum design and content development for Certificate (NQF level 5), Diploma (NQF Level 6) and Masters (NQF Level 9) qualifications in the domains of Business Leadership and Management of People.

His specific interest in Business Leadership and Business Leadership Development spurred his close involvement in the design and development of The Da Vinci TIPS Business Leadership Framework along with Professor Ben Anderson (CEO of The Institute) and Me Marla Koonin (Executive: Insights and Strategy at the Institute).

WORK BACKGROUND

Dr Brand spent the first 27 years of his career in the SA Navy, as an HR Officer, specialising in Education, Training and Development. After leaving the SA Navy he qualified as a Professional Practitioner in Real Estate (PPRE) and serviced the Real Estate industry for approximately two and a half years. Dr Brand also has experience at a number of Private Higher Education institutions.

WORK BACKGROUND

Esmé worked as a teacher before joining the banking industry, where she worked for  13 years (both Saambou Bank and African Bank).

She was a learning practitioner in the banking industry and has experience in banking processes, systems, legislation, change management and strategies to name just a few.

Dr Andy holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Management of Technology and Innovation (The Da Vinci Institute), Masters of Organisational Leadership (Regent University, USA) and Bachelor of Commerce in Education (Wits).

An International Leadership and Organisational Development consultant and Chartered Marketer and CEO and founder of the Brough Leadership Institute.

Ben holds a Master of Science in the Management of Technology and Innovation (The Da Vinci Institute), National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (TUT) and National Diploma in Total Quality Management (TUT)

WORK BACKGROUND

Ben is an independent consultant, assisting organisations in planning and designing strategies towards ‘Risk-based Integrated Management’. His experience includes 23 years (and 100+ projects) of delivering and/or project–managing consulting services (i.e., enterprise-level system modelling and business process architecture development, business process mapping and requirements integration) to government agencies and the private sector. Completed projects span a wide range of organisations across Africa and the Middle East. Industry sectors he has been consulting with include the services, construction, mining, processing, petroleum, power generation/distribution, leisure and manufacturing sectors – ranging in size from SMMEs to multinational corporations. He has also been serving as Faculty Head: Risk Management at the Da Vinci Institute since October 2016.

WORK BACKGROUND

Linda has been involved in the fields of Teaching, Training, Facilitating and Learning and People Development for the last 40 years. She started off as a secondary school teacher at Goromonzi Secondary school and moved up to become a teacher trainer in both Primary and Secondary School Teacher Training Colleges in Bulawayo and at the Belvedere Teachers College. From there she was appointed as a lecturer and subsequently the Deputy Director of Teaching and Learning at the University of Zimbabwe before joining FNB in South Africa; first working as the Registrar of its Learning division, then as Head of Consumer Education and finally as Head of Learnerships for the First Rand Group. She is currently a student coach, councillor and support specialist at the Da Vinci Institute.  She has been involved in a number of consultancy projects around learning and development.

While working at the Da Vinci Institute, Linda also has a current association with the University of Johannesburg where she has worked as;

  • An invited member of the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Industrial Psychology and People management’s Executive Thought Leadership Group
  • A member of the Advisory Committee for the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Industrial Psychology and People management PAC meeting
  • A member of the Advisory Committee for the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Management studies 
  • University of Johannesburg’s on the Young Academic’s Programme (Yap) whose aim is to find new ways of working as well as customising products for developing and growing markets. 
  • She is a member of the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) Learning and Development committee

Loudine Claassen holds a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management ( Rand Afrikaans University (Now UJ).

FIELD OF SPECIALISATION

Project Management.

WORK BACKGROUND

Loudine works as an Independent Contractor specialising as professional educator in the project management field. She is also a freelance editor, writer, curriculum developer and translator. She has worked in the Academic as well as Corporate sector where she assisted in and later on managed the HR Department. As HR Manager one of her responsibilities was to focus on the development of training courses as well as conducting these sessions.

Lerato holds a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Taxation (UCT), Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accounting (UCT).

WORK BACKGROUND

Experience span 25 years of serving his target population with excellence in a wide variety of projects in the mining, financial services, construction, defence, and education sectors. Philip’s clients included AFROSAI, Sasol, National Mentor Movement (volunteering), Aveng, ADvTECH, Anglo Base Metals, Namdeb, Trafigura.

Previous positions include Divisional Manager at the Development Bank of Southern Africa, General Manager and Principal Consultant for separate consulting firms.

Philip also conducted training sessions, public seminars and keynotes in Ghana, Zambia, Angola, Namibia, and Botswana.

His passion is his family, developing people, learning.

Philip is inspired by history, poetry, music, and the opportunity to transfer skills and knowledge.

WORK BACKGROUND

Achievement focused and results-driven consultant, passionate about offering 35 years of international and local banking experience, as well as financial accounting and management experience across a broad spectrum of skills, including client relationship management, credit risk control, financial accounting, and compliance.

Sushil holds the following degrees and diplomas: Bachelor of Commerce degree (Cum Laude) Business Management (The Da Vinci Institute), High Diploma in Education (Transvaal College of Education), Higher Diploma in Business Management with Distinction (Damelin), Train the Trainer Diploma (Damelin).

Sushil is a Contract Lecturer in Business Analysis, Business Management, Customer Relationship Management and Professional Writing at the Da Vinci Institute.

WORK BACKGROUND

After completing his Matric, Sushil continued to study towards his four-year Higher Education Diploma at the then Transvaal College of Education where he graduated in 1997, and thereafter began his journey as a teacher. This was short lived as he then found an opportunity to enter the corporate world of business and grabbed it with both hands. During this time, Sushil worked at three different jobs for almost 2 years in order to supplement his income. Sushil grew through the ranks and climbed the corporate ladder into a Senior role as the Operations Executive for a national organization where he spent a 20-year career. Simultaneously, he also served on the boards of three other organisations. He was also appointed as an Advisor to the Commissioner for the Compensation Fund and the Minister of Labour in the capacity of a Board Member at the Fund. His role included legislative matters together with service delivery matters to member companies and employees.

Whilst working in corporate, he was responsible for leading and developing various teams to meet the requirements of the business strategy. He has a strong passion for turning around business challenges into profitable and sustainable solutions. With having strong integrity and leadership qualities, he has extensive experience in an array of different fields. Whilst he was negotiating with business leaders in the boardroom, he was also in the front line with his operations teams when there was Industrial action strikes at clients. Sushil has managed and been part of the negotiation and the resolution of over 90 Industrial action strikes all over South Africa in his career. He can operate on a multitude of different levels at any given time and was given the recognition by his peer and the business through various awards over his career. Sushil has built a Management Consulting business where his focus is to help his clients grow their businesses through efficiencies and develop sustainable structures. His experience includes the formulation of Business Strategies, Financial and Business Risk Management, Industrial Relations, Change Management, Payroll bureau Management, Business process re-engineering and re design, Facilitation and Lecturing, Coaching and Mentoring, Fleet and Asset Management, Project Management, Information Technology, Payroll technology systems development and management, Operations Management, Property development and construction.

Riaan hold the following degrees, BCom Marketing Management, BCom (Hons) Business management, MCom in Business Management (Cum Laude) and a PhD in Management Studies (Operations Management) conferred by the University of South Africa.

WORK BACKGROUND

Dr Riaan Dirkse van Schalkwyk is a senior lecturer in Quality, Project and Operations Management at the UNISA Department of Operations Management. He has extensive practical experience (several management positions) and left the private sector for academia in 2006. Riaan has taught at various private higher education institutions before joining UNISA in 2009. Riaan was the recipient of the Unisa Council Platinum Award in CEMS – Top performer in a master’s degree for the academic year 2011. He has authored a number of publications and presented papers at both local and international conferences. Riaan is also the programme leader for the short course in Basics of Project Management offered by the CBM.

WORK BACKGROUND

Pieter held various posts in a number of organisations and industries that range from the Aviation Industry as an Air Traffic and Mission Controller, the Mining Industry as Human Resources Manager, and the Construction, Oil and Gas, Pharmaceuticals and Transport Industries as a Business Consultant, including owning and managing a travel agency.

As a change management and competency improvement consultant, Pieter’s areas of specialisation include project management, business analysis, diagnostic and research-based assignments, process engineering, systems development, training, coaching and behaviour change implementation.  He is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and has earned accredited life and business coach status with DuPont Sustainable Solutions (DSS).  He is also a certified practitioner, facilitator and coach using the NBI® (Neethling Brain Instruments) Thinking Preference Profiles.

Since 1997 Pieter owns and runs VNI Consultants, a small consultancy firm specialising in Organisational Development and Change Management.  Pieter is also CIO at the Applied Creativity Institute and the Lead Consultant at Status Aviation.

Juliette’s career started in the Freight Forwarding industry but has always been focused on education and training.  She owns and manages a training company, Metrominds, which was one of the TT100 finalists in the past two years, and she received the prestigious national ‘Boss of the Year’ in 2014.

Mark holds a Master of Business Administration (Milpark Business School) and Diploma in Business Management (Damelin)

WORK BACKGROUND

Mark has consulted both locally and internationally on Lean thinking and processes, having developed over 30 programs and run over 850 workshops and seminars. He has successfully influenced the practical implementation of business strategies, innovation and systems thinking in international corporations and manufacturing plants. As a serial entrepreneur Mark has had a shareholding in 5 separate businesses, has helped establish 3 SMME’s and was a founding member of UPSA. (United Professional Sales Association of South Africa)

WORK BACKGROUND

The bulk of Schalk’s experience includes teaching or work related to the higher education sector. He is currently focusing on furthering his academic career through presenting papers at local and international conferences, and publishing.

In terms of teaching experience, he has been involved with Philosophy and Business Ethics since 2011 and has taught at the University of Pretoria, UNISA and The Da Vinci Institute.

Heather is an experienced Higher Education Manager with a demonstrated history of working in the Business and Foundation sectors of Higher Education industry. She has lectured in Economics and modules relevant to transitioning into higher education. She is skilled in Management, Problem Solving, Higher Education, Coaching, Curriculum Development, Academic Staff Development, Lecturing, Educational Technology and Instructional Design. As a strong operations professional with focused in Professional development of Academic staff and Curriculum and Instructional Design and Development from the University of Pretoria, Heather is currently acting as the Dean Teaching and Learning at the Da Vinci Institute.

Schalk works in the academic realm as a freelance academic. He has 25 years corporate experience with various blue-chip organisations like FNB, Sasol, Accenture and Bidvest, the majority at senior management level in fields of Human Capital Management, Operations Management, Strategic and Corporate Performance Management and Programme and Project Management.

WORK BACKGROUND

Portia works in the field of systems thinking & designing sustainable learning strategies and cultures. She has worked for local and global companies in cross-functional roles across multiple industries by design. This has provided her with great insights on the learning challenges experienced in Organisations and the resultant negative impact i.e. restructures and job losses.

She was privileged to have been exposed to great learning Organisations and interventions which challenged her worldview and perspectives. Her interest in Systems thinking started in 2002, where she observed the nature of the inter-dependencies between the value of unlocking potential in individuals and how this can contribute to the sustainability of society and organisations at large.

In 2007, she combined her passion for developing individuals with systems thinking based MBA, her thesis being based on “employability”, which surfaced the socio-economic challenges in South Africa and recommended an ideal Organisational learning design. Whilst heading Learning and Development divisions in various Organisations, she experienced learning, to a large degree, as transactional, to a point of ticking compliance boxes and treating symptoms, instead of surfacing route causes to create value and impact. It was whilst studying at Insead Business School in Paris that she started exploring “What value creation really means”. She has a demonstrated track record of how systems thinking can be applied in highly complex Organisational environments. She is embarking on her Doctorate, which is focused on how systems thinking can be applied in the design of a systemic educational design for learning to be more relevant and value creating.

She also shares her story of her personal journey on how “challenges are gifts in disguise and opportunities if you choose”

WORK BACKGROUND

Pieter previously performed in various HR Positions focusing Employee Assistance, Organizational Development, Recruitment and Placement, Employee Relations, Leadership Development and Training. As HR Director of Major Financial Services Company executed the role of Strategic Business Partner for several years. His expertise lies in the development and implementation of HR Strategies as part of overall organizational strategy. Currently as the founding Director of Solstice Human Capital his focus is on Business Development and successful sustainable Client Relationships and Partnerships as well as a Specialist Consultant.

His notable experience saw him as Chief Director of Sport Support Services of Sport and Recreation South Africa where he oversaw and lead the following Directorates: International Relations; Sport Service Providers; Scientific Support; Research and Evaluation; Sport Infrastructure; and Major Events.  He also had oversight of two state entities, viz. Boxing South Africa, and the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport.

He is experienced in working in teams, delegations and committees as well as in the running of projects as an individual. He has published nationally and internationally. He served on examination boards, investigation/advisory commissions and industry work teams across 3 continents and amongst multiple cultures where he worked with people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and contexts. Anusha is an accomplished chartered accountant with over 20 years of experience in directing global finance, business development, enterprise risk management, compliance, and governance roles. Her philosophy is “to work smarter, not harder”, which has enabled her to develop and manage credible high performing teams. She follows a transformational leadership style in combination with servant leadership principles.

By leveraging her deep industry knowledge and tuning into her entrepreneurial spirit, Anusha started her own consulting practice with the aim of supporting businesses in developing their financial strategies and the execution thereof, assisting with financial analysis and advice, identifying current and future stakeholder needs and assisting with business process analysis and optimisation. She is also able to utilise her experience and insight in enterprise risk management (ERM) to support these services in conjunction with her compliance and governance exposure, thereby providing a more holistic approach.

Anusha is well versed in the supplier and enterprise development aspects of the BBBEE code with over 8 years’ experience and is able to guide organisations with this element of the BBBEE code. She is enthusiastic about growing and developing people and has spent time in her previous role as Financial Director, coaching and developing employees in the finance teams. She has been appointed by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), as a mentor for their 2020 Mentoring Programme which helps support new and upcoming CA’s in their journey.
