The Da Vinci Board, Executive, Council, Senate, Staff, and Community are absolutely devastated to learn of the tragic news that our Da Vinci 2020 Master’s alumnus Mr Mthokosizi Edwin Ntumba was the innocent bystander shot and killed in the student riots in Johannesburg City Centre yesterday (10/03/2021).
He graduated from The Institute in 2020 with his Master’s Degree, under the supervision of Dr Dumi Magadlela. His dissertation examined the correlation between the performance of the human settlements department and inadequate service delivery in the City of Tshwane. As shared in his profile that we showcased last year (read here: https://zcu.io/8wGe), Mr Ntumba expressed an unbridled passion and commitment to his family, his work, his research, and his country. He was a proud, hardworking, dedicated and remarkable Davincian.
Poignantly, when asked about the purpose of his research, Mr Ntumba speaks of the burning of tires on the streets, and how that creates the unwanted traffic congestion, and the destruction to property; as characteristics and frustrations about the complaints lodged from the communities that are concerned with inadequate service delivery from the Human Settlements Department of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, where he worked. In a cruel twist of fate, it would be this very thing that would tragically end his life.
He truly was a man of value, touched with remarkability and we send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to his beloved and devoted wife Thandi, his children – Sibulelo (7), Lubanzi (3) and Ntandokazi (5 months), his family, friends, his supervisor Dr Magadlela, his colleagues, and all who knew and loved him.
Mthokozisi, we promise that your memory will forever be alive in The Da Vinci galaxy as a remarkable, bright, and shining star. We will find a way to honour your legacy in a meaningful way, ensuring that your name and what you stood for will always be written in the Da Vinci stars and remain connected to us all. For you, sir, epitomise the Da Vinci dream of influencing the co-creation of sustainable societies, with honour and integrity, as an agile, aligned and engaged leader.
Lala ngoxolo, Mnumzane Ntumba. Hamba Kahle.
