Sports Coaching

The role of sports coaches, and their need for a comprehensive understanding in management, is gaining importance in the dynamic and competitive sports industry.  The electives in sports coaching aims to unpack the practices and principles of sports coaching and to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to shape and develop the performance of both athletes and sports coaches whilst instilling a sense of ownership in the business of sports coaching.

This unique approach to programme design for sports coaches is based on empirical data and seeks to articulate what athletes and sports coaches need to be excellent and professional in their performances on and off the field. During the programme students will broaden their understanding of sports coaching and the sports coaching environment, reflect on their own coaching experience and develop their awareness of what sports coaching is. They will develop expertise and knowledge in examining and enhancing athlete and sports coaching performances.

In the final stages of the programme, students will dedicate part of their studies to a workplace-based challenge. Students have the freedom to investigate areas of specific significance to their sports coaching practice. The qualification comprises five sports coaching electives and core management of technology and innovation modules and is aimed at current and prospective sports coaches interested to further their studies in the field and gain access into a Bachelor’s degree. The qualification comprises five sports coaching electives and is aimed at current and prospective sports coaches interested to further their studies in the field. 

You will be required to complete the fundamental, core and elective modules as indicated in the table below. Below is more information that is included in the sports coaching electives only.

Module Purpose:

 

The purpose of this module is to develop managerial leaders with insights and understanding regarding the impact of both global and local sports policies, governance structures and emerging trends relevant to sports coaching.

On completion of this module students should be able to: 

  • Identify and interpret policies relevant to the governance of sports coaching;
  • Identify both emerging global and local sports coaching trends and explain the potential impact thereof on sports coaching  practices;
  • Describe the business of sports coaching and compare the global and local  market in terms of sports coaching; and
  • Outline a conceptual approach to facilitate and/or enhance efficient and effective sports coaching practices.

 

Module Purpose:

 

The purpose of this module is to support and guide students in their exploration of various socio-economic factors that may influence the practice of sports coaching.

On completion of this module students should be able to: 

  • Discuss the impact of the socio-economic contexts on sports coaching;
  • Discuss a variety of sociological perspectives that may impact the practice of sports coaching;
  • Identify key cultural factors that may shape perceptions related to sport and sports coaching; and
  • Explain how economic factors impact the business of sports coaching.
Module Purpose:

 

The purpose of this module is for students to develop the required knowledge and skillsets, to promote the establishment and development of professional coaching practice (e.g., managing the coach-athlete relationship, managing the rights and privileges of coaches and athletes).

On completion of this module students should be able to: 

  • Identify and apply suitable teaching and learning principles and methodologies to establish and develop a professional sports coaching practice;
  • Describe and compare the distinctive features of various sports coaching domains and explain how their distinctive natures may inform the coach-athlete relationship; and
  • Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities associated with the coach-athlete relationship.

Module Purpose:

 

The purpose of this module is to support students in their pursuit to become high-performance managers and leaders within the context of the business of sports coaching.

On completion of this module students should be able to: 

  • Identify, explain and apply the main tenets of the sports coaching charter as relevant to the professional practice of sports coaching;
  • Investigate international trends and emerging practices relating to high-performance sports coaching;
  • Identify and describe initiatives to promote the personal well-being of sports coaches and explain how these impact the personal performance of sports coaches;
  • Explain the role of the sports coach as an owner-manager; and
  • Reflect on personal practices for the purpose of identifying areas of professional development.

 

Additional elective:

The following elective is reserved for students that are seeking further development in their role as Sports Coaching Developer and needs to be taken in addition to the preceding modules.

 

Module Purpose:

 

The purpose of this module is to develop managerial leaders with insights and understanding regarding the impact of managerial leadership-related policies, governance structures (frameworks and practices) and emerging trends relevant to the Sports Coach developer.

On completion of this module students should be able to: 

  • Identify and evaluate managerial leadership-related policies relevant to the Sports Coach developer;
  • Identify both emerging global and local Sports Coach developer trends and explain the potential impact thereof on sports coaching practices;
  • Discuss how the role of the Sports Coach developer relates to the business of Sports Coaching within global and local market contexts; and
  • Outline a conceptual approach to facilitate and/or enhance efficient and effective Sports Coach developer practices.
