Summary of the Programme

 

The Higher Certificate is designed to enable members of an organisation, whose career paths may not necessarily have included gaining formal qualifications, to realise their true potential by developing them to understand their role in an organisational environment and preparing them to perform their job more effectively within a contemporary organisational context. It also affords students the opportunity to add a new skill set to their repertoire. Summary of the Programme

 

The Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management is aimed at managers and leaders who will fully appreciate the importance of socio-economic transformation of South Africa. Students will focus on the key elements of business management of people, organisational behaviour, systems thinking, technology management and innovation management. This qualification was designed to prepare future business leaders for the multifaceted world of work. The qualification seeks to promote the development of knowledge, skills and capabilities required within varied management, administration and leadership contexts, by focusing on the business leadership discipline posited against the overarching fields of business management and administration. This takes cognisance of the complex interrelationship of a number of elements that contribute to and enhance, the sustainability of business ventures, including technology management; innovation management; and, people management, within a systems thinking framework. Summary of Programme

 

The purpose of this programme is to equip students with the required research acumen, knowledge, skills and competencies, to meaningfully contribute to new knowledge creation in the fields of Business, Commerce and Management Studies To support the development of strategic knowledge to resolve leadership challenges in an ethically responsible manner, through critical analysis of complex socio-economic contexts. While the strategic management and application of resources creates an advantage in the marketplace, the prevalent challenges for contemporary management and leadership practitioners relate to maximising these benefits for all stakeholders. What is required from a business management and leadership development perspective is transdisciplinary practitioners that are able to interrogate existing processes in order to determine the correct blend of resources required to enhance business performance. In view of the above, this qualification was developed to empower managers and leaders to improve the performance of their organisations through the selection and application of a blend of resources most suitable to address challenges in their individual contexts. When you exit the qualification you should be equipped to:

• Demonstrate a high level of the specialised knowledge and skills required for advanced academic research within the scholarly discipline of Business Leadership (as a

sub-category of the greater Business Management discipline).

• Analyse, formulate and apply suitable business analytical techniques to solve original convergent and divergent research problems relating to Business Leadership in

a manner that is innovative and ethically sound.

• Conduct research demonstrating the ability to:

Collect, analyse, organize, collate and critically evaluate and interpret information. 

  • Communicate findings effectively and present evidence of new knowledge generated using visual/graphical, numerical, advanced statistical and advanced academic writing and argumentation skills.
  • Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, community, or organisation and be able to assume accountability for determining, achieving and evaluating research output within Business Leadership and its related fields.
  • Manage and organise activities related to work and personal life responsibly and effectively, including learning and career development.
  • Critically evaluate and apply relevant technologies and scientific methods.
  • Approach the research process in an ethically sound manner, demonstrating a sense of responsibility towards the environment, the health and well-being of others, and being culturally and ethnically sensitive within both local and international contexts.   Two written articles formatted for publication in DHET Accredited Journals.

•   Demonstrate an understanding of systemic thinking in recognising business problems do not exist in isolation and that primary consideration should be given to a

variety of contexts (economy, market fluctuations, technological developments, etc.) and by implication, also variables that directly and indirectly impact on the

world of business (availability of resources, people, legislation, governance policy, etc.). Two individual presentations were made during institutional research

colloquia.
